The 5th Latin American Congress of Economic History (CLADHE V) will be held in the city of Sao Paulo (Brazil) on July 19-21, 2016. Organizers are the Economic History Associations from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Caribbean, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay. Spain and Portugal associations will participate as guests. The Brazilian Association for Research in Economic History (ABPHE) and the School of Economics, Management and Accounting of University of Sao Paulo (FEA/USP) are the hosts of the Congress.
Following the tradition of previous congresses held since 2007, the CLADHE V will provide an academic environment to discuss the latest researches in economic history of Latin America, as well as to address global perspectives and comparative approaches among regions. The organization of CLADHE V encourages the joint participation of researchers from Latin America and around the world to disseminate and discuss their works as well as to establish common research agendas.
The official languages of CLADHE V are Spanish and Portuguese; however, works in English are also welcome. The Congress will be organized through paper sessions, round tables, and conferences.
The Brazilian Association for Research in Economic History (ABPHE) was founded in September 1993 and gathers economists, historians, social scientists, and other scholars of economic history and related domains (as business history, history of economic thought, etc). ABPHE is the main Brazilian scientific organization in its field and promotes studies on economic history, through the publication of a specialized journal (História Econômica & História de Empresas, HE&HE ISSN 1519-3314), of books, and through regular meetings in which the academic community debates papers and paradigms of interpretation, shares ongoing research, and dialogues with researchers from other countries.
Among the honorary members of ABPHE are researchers and scholars who have brought significant contributions to the knowledge of economic history in Brazil, such as Alice Canabrava, Annibal Villanova Villela, Charles Ralph Boxer, Eulália Maria Lahmeyer Lobo, Frédéric Mauro, Nelson Werneck Sodré, Celso Furtado, and Roberto Cortés Conde. Nowadays, ABPHE has about 200 members working in different regions and states of Brazil.
ABPHE celebrated its 20th anniversary as an institution promoting regular scientific events during the 10th National Congress of Economic History and the 11th International Conference of Business History in September 2013 in the city of Juiz de Fora (state of Minas Gerais). Moreover, since 2002 ABPHE holds biennually the Meeting of Graduate Students in Economic History, which brings together master students and PhD candidates working in the field of economic history and in correlated areas.
Nowadays, ABPHE is a member of the Latin American Association of Economic History (CLADHE) and of the International Economic History Association (IEHA). ABPHE joined the latter in 1996 and since then has been developing activities along with the Latin American associations. In December 2007 ABPHE participated in the organization of the 1st Latin American Congress of Economic History – CLADHE I, which was held in Montevideo (Uruguay); in 2010 ABPHE participated in CLADHE II that took place in Mexico City; in 2012 it participated in the CLADHE III held in Bariloche (Argentina); and in 2014 ABPHE joined the CLADHE IV that occurred in Bogotá (Colombia).
